Are Cordless Battery Snow Blowers Any Good?
In recent years the technological advancements in Lithium-Ion batteries and brushless motors have been huge. Unlike older versions, modern lithium batteries not only produce more power output but also provides a longer run time on each charge.
So, why should you consider buying a cordless snow blower in Canada? Well, there are a few good reasons. Firstly, compared to gas snow blowers, battery-powered snow blowers require little to no maintenance. And, secondly, they are A LOT quieter, and a handy tool to grab and go.
For example, take the EGO Power+ two-stage snow blower. Ok, it’s top of the range and not within the budget of everybody.
But this amazing cordless snow blower has a clearing width of 24 inches and can clear snow up to 20 inches in depth. With the EGO proudly boasting that ‘it can clear an 18 car driveway with 8″ of snow on a single charge’.
But, unlike most cordless snow blowers this is a two-stage blower that is designed to deal with heavier snowfalls.
Don’t want or need a machine that size? Well, at the other end of the scale you have the wonderful little Snow Joe cordless snow shovel. Ideal for small amounts of snow up to 7 inches deep, it’s a lightweight snow shovel that has a throwing distance of 20 foot.
The rechargeable lithium-ion battery gives enough battery power for up to 22 minutes of run time which is plenty to remove snow from a small walkway or path to your vehicle on the driveway.
So now you’ve seen both ends of the spectrum, let’s jump in.

What To Consider When Choosing A Cordless Snow Blower (Or Any Snow Blower)
There are a few important factors you need to consider before rushing out and buying the first snow blower you see or like. Obviously, how much snow you get on average each winter dictates the size. But you also need to think about what type and power source you would prefer or need.
For example, gas-powered snow blowers are powerful, but they are big and heavy, do you need a gas model, and more importantly would you struggle to use it.
Various Types Available
If you are new to the world of snow blowers it is important to understand the types of snow blowers that are available. Don’t worry there are only 3 main types along with 3 power source options available.
I won’t go into too much detail here, so if you want to know more, check out my blog that covers the different types of snow blowers in depth.
First Up: Single-Stage Snow Blowers
Nearly all models of single-stage snow throwers are either a cordless electric snow blower or a corded electric snow blower. Also referred to as a snow thrower, these machines use only an auger to both gather and throw the snow.
Next: Two-Stage Snow Blowers
Two-stage snow blowers are more powerful and are mostly gas-powered machines. (However, as you will see in my reviews they are starting to make it into the world of cordless snow blowers). A two-stage snow blower uses an auger to gather snow and an impeller (the second stage) to throw it.
If you’d like to learn more, I’ve covered the differences between single stage vs two stage snow blowers more in-depth.
Lastly: Three-Stage Snow Blowers
This is the most powerful snow blower and is always gas powered. This machine features, an auger, the impeller, and (the third stage) an accelerator. To be honest, very few households will need one as these machines are designed more for commercial use or exceptionally heavy snowfalls of wet and heavy snow.
Power Source
As you will have noticed above there are also different power source options you need to consider. These are:
- Corded electric snow blowers – A corded snow blower is usually a single-stage snow blower. The downside is that you are tethered to the cord, therefore for larger areas, you may also need to invest in an appropriate winter outside extension cord.
- Cordless snow blowers (battery-powered snow blower) – Electric cordless snow blowers are truly the no-hassle snow blower and ideal for areas where electricity might not be accessible. However, as with all battery-powered tools, although not tethered to a cord, you are limited on run time.
- Gas-powered snow blowers – The more powerful gas models are mostly two and three-stage snow blowers. These machines are great for those of you that live in a snow zone or regularly have heavy and wet snow to clear. But, they are a lot noisier and require a reasonable amount of maintenance.
Size & Weight
Don’t be tempted to underestimate the importance of size and weight when deciding on the best snow blower for you. There is no benefit in getting any snow removal machine that does the job but puts you at risk of straining or even injuring yourself.
Snow removal can be hard work, and using a snow blower should make it easier than shoveling snow. However, buy a machine that is too big and heavy, you will likely be extremely disappointed.
All that being said, the size of snow blower you opt for does need to be able to handle the amount of snow you receive. If you struggle then maybe save your money and spend it by paying someone to do the job for you. Your health is important and people die every winter while clearing snow.
Clearing Width, Depth & Chute Control
Snow removal is not easy at the best of times, and it’s even worse if you have a large property and large amounts of snow. This is where the clearing width, depth intake, and chute control on a snow blower come into play.
If you only receive a small quantity of very light and fluffy snow a small cordless or electric snow shovel is the tool for you. Most electric shovels have a clearing width of at least 12 inches and can handle up to 6 inch deep snow.
Although snow shovels do not feature a discharge chute, they still have a throwing distance of between 20-30 feet, but straight ahead instead of to the side.
But if you experience light snowfalls of up to a foot of snow regularly, then one of the small single-stage electric machines is probably the one to have. Whether it is a corded or cordless snow blower these machines is up to you but they can clear snow to approximately 12 inches in depth. These feature a chute that gives you full control over where you throw snow.
The clearing widths will vary, but it is usually between 12 and 18 inches in a cordless model, plenty for the average household. For heavier snowfalls of 12 inches or more and heavy wet snow, then I recommend that you opt for a two-stage snow blower.
Other Features (That You May Want, But Don’t Need)
If you are on a budget, I know it’s hard, but try not to get too carried away with extra features, spend your money on quality. However, that being said, there are some features that are both practical and useful. Below I will list just some and let you decide whether you need them.
Skids – Skids act as a spacer between the surface being cleared and the auger that is gathering the snow. When adjusted correctly skids mean you will leave a thin layer of snow on the ground, allowing you to clear gravel or uneven surfaces.
LED headlights – Useful if you get home late or go to work early
Heated hand grips – Nice, but a bit of a luxury really
Forward and Reverse Gears – Essential if you are planning on investing in a larger and more powerful snow blower to clear large amounts of deep snow
Self Propelling – Again, mainly for the larger two-stage models, but having a self-propelling snow blower really does help make light work of clearing snow and snow removal tasks.
My Number 1 Choice & Final Thoughts
There it is guys, all you need to know along with some reviews on the best cordless snow blowers available on the market. The power and quality that modern technology has brought to cordless tools today has definitely put them on the map and made them a viable option to being tied to corded electric tools.
I must admit if I were to choose my favorite, it has to be my first review. The EGO Power+ 21-inch Cordless Snow Blower, as I believe this machine has everything that you could ask for.
